SPOILERS: Do not read if you have not seen Star Wars:The Force Awakens.
The Force is strong with J.J. Abrams. I finally saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens and it was everything I was hoping it would be. Going into it with all the hype, I was nervous about how it was going to go. J.J. did awesome with the Star Trek reboot and I hoped this would be the same, if not better. But my biggest worry was he would geek out too much and pull a George Lucas. Then all hope of reviving Star Wars would have been lost.
Like most big fans, I had several theories brewing as I waited to see the film. All week I rewatched Episode 1-3. (I watched the originals last month.) It had been years since the last time I watched them. Half way into The Phantom Menace I was quickly reminded why. If JarJar was really a Sith Lord, I never would have watched a Star Wars film again. But I knew that theory could never be true.
I was really curious about what Luke’s status would be in this film. We never see him in the trailer. He isn’t featured on the poster. Where is he? I bounced ideas off my Star Wars expert and came up with a few theories. I thought he could have caved to the dark side and Kylo Ren was his apprentice. OR he was dead and that is why everyone comes together without him because he was murdered or something. But I was wrong. He isolated himself from everyone because his apprentice turned on him and destroyed everything. I did like Luke’s choice of planet for going into hiding. Much better than Yoda’s swampy Dagobah.
Now I just have to talk about the baddie, Kylo Ren. First off Adam Driver is a surprisingly perfect choice. He is everything Hayden Christensen should have been for young Anakin. Driver makes you feel bad for Ren because you can tell he is battling between the light and dark. Where as young Anakin, I’m kind of glad he got chopped into a wiggling nub by Obi Wan. He deserved it. I did predict Ren was Han and Leia’s son because that family line is doomed. Honestly Luke’s whole family should have been banned from the Jedi Order after the whole Vadar fiasco. Yes, I understand the jedi need people but that family history kind of screams WARNING: Do not choose as first apprentice. I can’t even talk about what happened with Han, it hurts too much. With that being said, Ren does create an interesting dynamic with Luke, and I’m super excited to see that develop.
I am so excited for the two young actors playing the leads in this film. Rey and Fin are great additions to the Star Wars universe. It was nice to see them as a large part of the story line and not be related to the original three (Luke, Leia, Han), or at least as far as we know. I hope Rey becomes the jedi Anakin was supposed to be and restores balance to the force. Fin I hope is the beginning of the breakdown of the Stormtrooper group think.
So I’m a little confused about this Supreme Leader guy. Did he just swoop after the dissolve of the Empire or is he a wannabe Palpatine? And a side note, Domhnall Gleeson did awesome as the Supreme Leader’s number two.
My brain is still trying to process everything that happened. So I will leave you with a few questions:
How did Rey end up on Jakku?
Did Captain Phasma get smashed by the trash compactor or did she escape?
What is going to happen to Chewy?
What has Luke been doing while in isolation?
AND Where is Lando?
Next Up: Pride and Prejudice. No zombies.
